Summers in Washington DC are hot! Although dense shade can be the bane of garden existence, this spot feels lush and cool. This urban shade garden uses contrasting leaf textures and pinks and apricots to brighten the space and complement the Japanese maple ‘Calico’ focal point. Stormwater control in the area is achieved with large irregular flagstone and Delaware river rock paving set like a stream into the patio. The line of river rock directs the eye into and through the space, from the formal outdoor dining area. With the addition of a fire pit and four client procured and painted ‘Wave Hill’ chairs, the area becomes a pleasing vision and respite year around.
