THE BLUE HOUSE Colonial Beach, VA
A rebuilt 100 year old coastal cottage’s new garden repeats the relaxed, casual mood of the cottage and its location. Plants were chosen to stand out against the dark blue exterior and to be drought tolerant. The client’s favorite colors inspired the plant choices with dramatic foliage, long blooms and a bit of old-fashioned whimsy. The lushness of the new flower border mimics a meadow. Standard evergreen shrubs of various heights along the fence line block or frame views. Smaller trees within the border were under planted with pink, gray, purple, yellow and burgundy blooms. Low variegated grasses were used as edging. A cut grass pathway keeps the space light and informal. The dense planting plan means fewer weeds and less maintenance.
